Philippine Seafarers Assistance ProgrammeThe health of the seafarers is a major concern of PSAP. It is one of the major components of its program. Aside from HIV/AIDS it also looks at the other aspects of the health and welfare of the maritime manpower such as occupational health, stress, and psychological problems including spiritual health. The organization sits in the Sub-Committee on Health Information of the International Committee on Seafarers Welfare (ICSW). It also actively participates in the activities of the International Maritime Health Association and other organizations and individuals who are into the maritime health.

RESEARCH

PSAP conducts, assists and can be contracted to do studies on the different fields of the seafaring industry. It has a pool of researchers from the field of maritime law, policy, health, economics and migration. It also has the capability of directly linking with the seafarers in various parts of the world. PSAP has a network of organizations which can assist in conducting field work. The organization has conducted studies for the Seafarers International Research Center (SIRC) of Cardiff University, the International Maritime Health Association (IMHA) and the Municipal Health Office of Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

MARITIME INDUSTRY

The maritime industry practically runs the global economy of the world. The shipping industry, the shipping management, government authorities, manning agencies, labor unions, ILO and IMO are a few of the many players in the industry. In partnership with the rest of the stakeholders, the world goes through smooth sailing with the seafarers as the human backbone. PSAP plays a major role by acting as a liaison to all industry players in behalf of the seafarers.

ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT

Seafaring is one of the most hazardous occupations in the world; second to commercial fishermen. Economic opportunity is one of the major reasons why Filipino seafarers engage in this profession despite the risk. The Philippine Seafarers Assistance Programme has one of its goals to realize this aspiration of the Filipino seafarers. It implements and assists seafarers through its economic programmes. Filipino seafarers contribute 2 billion US dollars to the Philippine economy annually.
